About the Event:

As students continue to pursue higher education in what is becoming an increasingly precarious economic environment, the Michelson 20MM Foundation is committed to providing support to organizations and institutions who are working to help students increase persistence and graduation rates through efforts that help students meet their basic needs. Basic needs are defined as a student’s ability to adequately meet their food, housing, mental health, sleep, child/dependent care, hygiene, and transportation needs.

In support of these efforts, our next round of the Michelson Spark Grant program will focus on this very important issue. The 2022 Student Basic Needs funding cycle will run from August 23 – September 7, and seeks to fund macro level projects in support of systems level strategies that create impact at scale and inform public policy. Additional details:

We will be awarding grants up to $25,000 to nonprofits and educational institutions looking for support of projects that hit one of our focus areas.

We will not be funding initiatives that would result in direct assistance to students during this Michelson Spark Grant round, such as emergency student aid, laptops and hotspots for remote learning, or food and housing vouchers. While we realize there is a tremendous need among students for direct support, at this time we are leveraging our funding to effect broader systemic change.

For this funding cycle, we will focus on organizations that are doing work in California.

We welcome proposals where Michelson Spark Grant funds are part of a larger overall project with multiple funding streams.
