GIBLIB, one of the companies in Michelson 20MM Foundation’s impact investment portfolio, received a special mention in TIME Magazine’s “Best Inventions of 2021” list on November 10.

Congratulations to GIBLIB, one of the companies in Michelson 20MM Foundation’s impact investment portfolio, for receiving a special mention in TIME Magazine’s “Best Inventions of 2021” list on November 10.
Founded in 2015, GIBLIB is an on-demand video medical education platform featuring lectures, discussions, surgical procedures, and more from physicians and other experts at institutions such as Cedars-Sinai, the Cleveland Clinic, the Mayo Clinic, UC San Francisco, the University of Iowa, USC. It’s a place for surgeons to share medical lectures, surgical videos, and transcripts.
“Fancy a Friday night watching a spinal-fusion surgery in 4K? Then GIBLIB is your place: the company aims to become ‘the Netflix of the medical world,’ and is doing so with highly produced, high-def content,” Jesse Will wrote in TIME. “The service is meant to be viewed by doctors and professionals, of course, for familiarity and accreditation. The surgery footage, along with courses and lectures on the latest research, comes from some of the best medical institutions around.”
TIME’s Best Inventions list highlights 100 innovations that are changing how we live and inventions that are “making the world better, smarter, and a bit more fun.” Their process of choosing the best inventions included soliciting “nominations across a variety of categories from TIME’s editors and correspondents around the world, and through an online application process. We then evaluated each contender on a number of key factors, including originality, creativity, efficacy, ambition, and impact. The result is a list of 100 groundbreaking inventions that are changing how we live, work, play, and think about what’s possible.”
GIBLIB is focused on building the world’s largest library of Continuing Medical Education (CME)-accredited medical lectures and surgical procedures in 4K and 360VR. With virtual access to CME-accredited lectures, medical professionals can save time and money while having more options to earn their CMEs. GIBLIB recognizes that most, if not all, medical students will soon utilize virtual reality headsets in their training, so the company is working to develop content to meet that burgeoning need.

As GIBLIB’s subscriber base grows, so too does the demand for content. They formed a partnership with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on a course called “Cedars-Sinai: The Essential GI Surgeries,” and another partnership with USC Keck School of Medicine, where they filmed their first surgery.
“GIBLIB now films regularly with six of the top 10 hospitals in the United States,” Emily Chu wrote for USC News. “They don’t have to look for new partners; instead, new partners reach out to them.”
GIBLIB received an impact investment from Michelson 20MM to help grow the company. GIBLIB CEO and co-founder Brian Conyer said the funding has provided critical support in their efforts to create a library of surgery videos and medical lectures that are filmed with the best equipment, available on-demand, and delivered in a compelling format, thus providing greater access to medical education.
“We’re investing the money into the content team and building out our library so we can provide medical education to a global community,” he said. “We really believe that everyone should have access to the world’s greatest educators and everyone should be able to learn from the best.”
Phillip Kim, managing director of Michelson Impact Ventures, congratulated GIBLIB for the well deserved recognition for being on the cutting edge of online medical education.
